Yoga in the park

Had an unusual photo assignment over the past weekend. A friend of my wife’s, who owns a local yoga studio, asked if I would shoot some photos of her and her husband, and a couple of their yoga instructors. I didn’t have much time, but we found a one hour block mid-day on Sunday that we could make work, and arranged to meet at a local park.

The light was pretty bright and harsh, around the noon hour, and it was a bit cool and breezy. The park was not quite in bloom yet, with the grass still a bit dormant, and the trees a little bare. And the geese had taken over the place! So, we had to do the best we could with locations and angles.

My son came along as my assistant, carrying gear and doing his best with my reflector. I wish we’d had more time, a few clouds, and a more experienced assistant, but we still had fun. The instructors were quite amazing, as you can see. Very lovely young ladies, who impressed the heck out of me with their athleticism and grace. They didn’t even really need to warm up or anything, and were very eager to try a bunch of different poses, making my job pretty easy. When I got home from the shoot, I only half-jokingly told my wife, “To heck with motorcycles and dogs and stuff, from now on I want to specialize in yoga photography!” :)

I haven’t spent a ton of time in post processing with them to this point (been very busy this week), but experimenting with some different techniques that I thought might work well with these photos.
